Squash Psych Tip of the Week

Goal setting is one of the most important aspects of progressing within a sport. Making sure our goals are realistic and reachable are most important in becoming successful. The trouble we may run into when it comes to setting goals is forgetting to check in and reevaluate those goals at least once a week. If a certain goal wasn’t met, being able to say “okay how can I adjust this goal to make it reachable?”, is critical in the process.

Where is an easy starting point for someone struggling with goal setting?

S.M.A.R.T goals:

Specific: make the goal as specific as possible

Measurable: the goal has to have a objective measure of success over a period of time and traceable to see progress

Attainable: it has to be realistic or disappointment can happen quickly.

Relevant: make sure the goal contributes to the overall situation and makes sense as a step to the path of success

Timely: setting up goals that have a timeline helps to see progression and set up milestones.

If goal setting is not something done regularly it can be a difficult routine to start for the first few weeks but building good habits is what it is all about when wanting to be successful within your sport. Goal setting is a big conversation but SMART goals is always a great and easy place to start when establishing your wants and needs as an elite athlete.
