Squash Psych Blog of the Week!

The importance of proper Aggression in squash.

Aggression is a word that has always had a negative connotation in real world settings but can be necessary in a sport setting. For a sport like squash aggression is necessary to come out victorious. There are two main types of aggression to be discussed in sports.

Instrumental Aggression: calculated type of aggression used as a means to an end (winning/playing well). It is not an emotional response to a situation.

Hostile aggression: is an in the moment reaction and has the goal to harm based on emotion; most likely anger.

Instrumental aggression is a great tool to use for young squash players to use to become victorious. Especially in a situation where they are playing a fifth game, instrumental aggression is similar to “locking in” and “being gritty”.

Because squash feels very all or nothing for many young players, the type of aggression displayed sometimes turns hostile which puts players in a negative headspace that is extremely difficult to come out of.

How can a players keep aggression more instrumental and less hostile?

Breath work (various breathing techniques) and practicing positive and instructional self-talk are two easy and in the moment sport psychology remedies that can put players back in a calm and rational headspace to be able to perform their best.
