Motivation - Squash Psych Post of the Week!

What is Motivation? And How does it affect performance?

Motivation is the things that makes us want to excel in areas of our lives.

Motivation in sport is usually defined by the intensity and direction of the effort that is put into their sport by the athlete.

There are two main types of motivation that an athlete may experience. Those two are intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

Athletes that are intrinsically motivated are driven by internal factors such as personal satisfaction and enjoyment. They are fueled by improvement within their sport.

Those that are extrinsically motivated are more fueled by outside factors such as winning/ rewards and to avoid punishment.

There should be a balance between the two. Being motivated by winning is not always bad but that can be detrimental if an athlete hits a tough sport in their sport. Those motivated by improvement tend to be more realistic about their goals and able to process loss better but everything in life needs balance.

Ways to increase overall motivation:

1. Set weekly goals within the sport

2. Focusing on the process over outcome

3. Check in with support system/ ask them to help you be more accountable (family, coaches or friends)

4. Check in with yourself often about why you play your sport and what makes you happen in your sport.
