Long Story Short
Resistance Training, or more simply, lifting objects and putting them down is helpful for youth athletes. It’s not controversial and it’s not disproportionately dangerous, athletes who lift are better athletes.
Is that true for squash?
Bluntly, yes it is… we want players who are functional, able to lunge, generate torque, reach high and maintain stability in challenging circumstances. We also want players who are resistant to injury so they can get more squash specific training done.
Take home message
Make sure players are well coached and in a safe environment in anything, but especially in the gym. Having ticked that rather obvious box, lifting is indisputably helpful in creating winning players.
